I.Smyth, Woodbridge Stock No.3283 c.1805

// SOLD //

I.Smyth, Woodbridge c.1805

An exquisite rare small tavern clock, the 16" wooden dial with roman and arabic numerals, signed 'I Smyth Woodbridge', the five wheel train on a seaboard in a mahogany case with cushion foot, and with typical 'pierced heart' brass tavern clock hands, the minute hand counterbalanced. The glass is held in a turned mahogany surround with inset bezel lock. Total height : 36". All tavern or Act of Parliament clocks are rare - and small ones particularly so. This has its original pendulum and weight, and has a case of excellent colour.

Stock No.3283

Israel Smyth is recorded working in the Thoroughfare, Woodbridge, in the early years of the 19th century, having been baptised at St. Mary's Church in April 1784, until at least 1839. The dial layout would suggest a late eighteenth century date for the manufacture of this clock, but this must be a slight anachronism as it is unlikely that Smyth would have been in a position to make it before c.1805.
