J. Thwaites for Geo. Jamison, Portsmouth c.1807

A very elegant Georgian wall clock, the 12" diameter convex wooden dial signed 'Geo. Jamison, Portsmouth'. The movement, numbered 4027, is both signed by Thwaites, and also embossed 'G.Jamison' to the front plate. The mahogany case has a narrow dial surround, a heavy concave bezel, with an integral lock.

Stock No. 2972

George Jamison was a partner in London with William Howells and Paul Philippe Barraud making Mudge timekeepers until 1799, whereupon each partner went his own way. He was a expert on Mudge chronometers, being 'Chronometer maker to the High Commissioners of the Navy'. In 1805 he moved to Portsmouth - presumably chasing marine business - where he stayed until his death in 1810.
